Chapter Thirteen

The talk with Teague gave Bass a lot to think about. He hadn’t yet determined his answer, but he knew one thing after mulling the facts. He respected the Ranger immensely and would give him an answer as soon as possible.

Bass couldn’t wait to discuss the matter with Daisy and see what she thought about it. After all, she wanted the best for Petula. She saw deep into his sister’s heart at the woman Pet could become.

As he finished getting ready for the morning, Bass wondered what Daisy would say when he told her he planned to ride into town with everyone. She’d probably tell him it was too soon and that might prove true. But the thought of her and his sister leaving him here with Myrtle seemed less appealing. He liked the cook well enough, and she hadn’t bitten his head off recently, but going to town sounded promising.

He’d just tell Daisy that he wanted to pay Doc Thomas a visit. If the medic saw him capable of a short fifteen-or twenty-minute ride then maybe he could determine how long the rest of the recovery might take. Bass wanted to make sure he used every minute of what was left to build Daisy’s trust in him.

Besides, he wanted to ride along and provide added protection for the wagonload of women. If the gang was in the vicinity, they might be less likely to attack if they saw two men among the mix.

After dressing, Bass headed downstairs. Petula and Ollie greeted him, each exiting the kitchen and both looking surprised that he had donned his best clothes.

“Where’s Daisy?” Had she already eaten breakfast?

“Out helping Teague get the wagon ready,” Petula informed him.

Bass decided not to eat. He could always get food in town.

“You taggin’ along?” Ollie seemed pleased by the prospect.

“I thought the doctor wouldn’t let you travel yet?” Worry and something else made Petula look less than enthusiastic to share the ride.

Since Teague would be riding alongside them as guard, she would probably have preferred that Bass stay home. But he’d thought she was angry with the Ranger and the pair wouldn’t be talking this morning. Her infatuation with Teague clearly overrode any anger she bore him. Not that Bass could fault her. He’d done the same last night. He’d flared at Daisy then tried his best to ease the tension he’d caused between them.

Bass was grateful Teague opted to go with the women this morning. Myrtle hadn’t seen the gang so she was no threat to the robbers; therefore she was safe from harm. For all the gang knew, Teague figured they couldn’t be certain Bass had survived the shoot-out unless one of them stuck around town without anyone knowing it. Daisy, Ollie and Petula needed to stay together as a group, so there would be no leaving Ollie home with him and the cook.

“I’m going,” Bass told his sister stubbornly, “to show Doc Thomas how well I’m doing and find out when he’ll release me, and I could lend a hand if Teague needs me.
